Virginia Press Association Dues Structure
• Dues for Active members will be based on the open rate for a full page of retail
advertising (as shown on the member’s rate card on July 1 of the relevant year), rather
than on highest one-day circulation. Using ad rates rather than circulation figures means
that dues will increase in the future to the extent that members increase their open retail rate.
• Active Daily members will pay 40 percent of their open full-page retail rate
with a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $5,000.
• Active Non-Daily members will pay 40 percent of their open full-page retail
rate, with a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $750.
• Because Associate members receive all VPA/VPS benefits except the right to vote and hold
office, and because paid and free distribution newspapers are competitors in the marketplace,
Associate dues will be 30 percent of the open full-page retail rate, with a minimum
of $200 and a maximum of $650.
• Free distribution newspapers who have chosen to qualify as papers of record for
purposes of carrying legal notice advertising, must (rather than “may”) apply for
Active membership.
• Affiliate members’ dues will be an amount equal to the number of full-time
Virginia employees, with a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $500.
• Educational members’ dues will be $200.
• Sustaining members’ dues will remain as they now are, at $75.
