Membership Information

The Virginia Press Association has several types of membership:

Active (or Regular) Membership in the VPA is open to any bona fide daily or weekly newspaper of general circulation published in Virginia and holding a U.S. Postal Service publications class mailing permit. Border state newspapers (those actively seeking and servicing subscribers in Virginia, providing regular staff coverage of Virginia affairs and including Virginia as part of their market) are also eligible for regular membership. Regular Membership is the only membership category entitled to vote and to hold office in the association. Free distribution newspapers may be eligible for active membership if they meet the criteria set forth in the VPA's bylaws.

- Active Daily members will pay 40 percent of their open full-page retail rate, with a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $5,000, plus three mailed subscriptions to the newspaper.

- Active Non-Daily members will pay 40 percent of their open full-page retail rate, with a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $750, plus three mailed subscriptions to the newspaper.

Associate Membership in the VPA is open to free distribution newspapers and educational institutions. Associate members can participate in VPA contests and enjoy all member services. Associate dues are 30 percent of the open full-page retail rate, with a minimum of $200 and a maximum of $650, plus three mailed subscriptions to major publications for free distribution newspapers or other periodicals; or one mailed subscription for non-newspaper or magazine associate members. Free distribution newspapers who have chosen to qualify as papers of record for purposes of carrying legal notice advertising must apply for active membership.

Affiliate Memberships are open to businesses or associations that sell newspaper supplies, equipment or services. Affiliate members' dues are an amount equal to the number of full-time Virginia employees, with a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $500.

Individual Memberships and Individual Sustaining Memberships are open to people formerly affiliated with an active regular or associate member newspaper. Dues are $75 per year.

Educational Memberships are open to mass communications students at Virginia colleges and universities or serving on the campus newspaper staff. Educational members' dues are $200.

Sustaining Memberships are open to people formerly affiliated with an active or associate member newspaper. Sustaining members' dues are $75.

Limited Memberships are open to secondary school teachers for $10. Limited memberships include a subscription to Virginia's Press, on approval of the VPA board of directors.
