BRISTOL - Bristol Herald Courier
The Bristol Herald Courier offers two paid internships during the summer. They run 12 weeks
each beginning mid May. We prefer the prospective intern to have at least one year of college
newspaper experience or a prior internship with another newspaper. Herald Courier interns will
average at least three news and/or feature bylines a week in a working, learning environment.

FREDERICKSBURG - The Free Lance-Star
The Free Lance-Star sponsors one minority journalism internship each summer. Candidates must be
willing to relocate to the Fredericksburg area during the 10-week summer program. Candidates may be
eligible for a housing allowance. The intern is exposed to all facets of the news operation and works
under the supervision of an editor. The internship is open to rising juniors, seniors and graduating

LYNCHBURG - The News & Advance
The News & Advance, a morning paper, offers one paid reporting internship. Interns are
considered general assignment reporters and do real stories, not busywork. Rising seniors
and juniors studying journalism or involved with campus newspapers are preferred. The
internship is 12 weeks. Interns will need a car. Selection is based on experience and
ability. Additional consideration is also given for students from the Central Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS - Daily Press
Summer internships will be awarded. The internships may be filled in any newsroom function: local news,
sports, business, features, copy desk, photo or graphics. Teamwork is underscored at every level in our newsroom:
in the group of senior editors, in groups of team editors, in teams of reporters, copy editors and photographers. You
will be assigned real work: reporting, creating graphics, shooting photographs and copy editing stories. You will need
your own car (we reimburse for mileage). To expose you to different aspects of newsroom operations, you will handle
assignments from various subject areas. Each intern is assigned a mentor and will participate in team meetings and in
brown-bag programs on topical subjects. The internships are generally aimed at - but not limited to - rising juniors,
seniors or recent graduates. Selection will be based on experience (college newspaper and professional internships),
transcripts, essays and references. Finalists may be interviewed. Candidates are asked to write a 450-700 word essay

NORFOLK - The Virginian-Pilot
Are you a college student who has completed your junior or senior year? Have you worked on your college
newspaper? Would you like to spend your summer working at a 200,000-circulation newspaper located near the
beach? Then you are eligible for The Virginian-Pilot summer internship program!
The program is aimed at students with the following career aspirations:

The Virginian-Pilot internships are highly competitive. Therefore, experience working on a college newspaper is
a must, and a previous internship at a daily paper is a plus. Reporters and photographers will need a car. Sophomores
and graduate students also are eligible. Interns will have regular opportunities to meet with The Pilot’s writing coaches
and other newsroom professionals to talk about their career options.

1) Submit a letter of application, resume and the names of three references.
2) Reporters, copy editors and designers should include five to eight published work samples showing the
range of your best writing, page layout or headline writing.
3) Photographers and graphic artists should submit a CD that includes at least 10 samples of photographs

The Pilot selects 10 interns, who will be notified by January 15, 2008. The pay is $575 a week. All internships

PULASKI - The Southwest Times
The Southwest Times offers 1-5 unpaid internships in advertising, editorial, photography and technical support
throughout the year. Interns are generally allowed to work in their chosen areas. Since internships are not paid positions,
hours and days, etc. are liberal. Established successful internship relationship with Radford University and Virginia Tech. We
also offer scholarship opportunities for juniors and seniors in college, if that can be worked in as well. Call or write Mike

RICHMOND - Richmond Times-Dispatch
The Richmond Times-Dispatch summer internship program offers full-time, paid positions for 10 weeks for upper classmen or new graduates.
These include three reporting positions, two multimedia reporter/producer positions, and a graphic artist position.
Our copy editing position is only through the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund copy editing program.
In the fall, we offer one photography internship position. This past summer, we paid our interns $450 a week.
The application deadline is December 21, 2007, for the summer positions. For the fall photography position, the deadline is June 6, 2008.
Applications should include a cover letter, resume, and 10 to 12 clips and CDs for photo and graphic candidates. The clips should be on 8 1/2 by 11 paper and, for ease of reading and review, NOT reduced in type size. Send your application to:

The News Leader offers at least one paid, full-time summer internship to a qualified
college student. The number available varies each year. Applicants can specialize in news,
sports or feature writing, photography or copy editing/design. Candidates are selected
based on their college newspaper experience, course work and clips. Candidates are assigned
and scheduled as appropriate to skill level. The newspaper also offers a limited number of
part-time school-year internships of 10-15 hours per week in writing and photography.
Students are required to be enrolled in a for-credit college work program. Applicants

internship in the newsroom. The intern will write news and feature stories and will produce copy for real estate,
