Times-Dispatch Produces Weekly Entertainment Webcast

Any good bands playing this weekend? What's that new restaurant like? What's playing at the movies? The Times-Dispatch is producing a weekly 3-minute webcast on entertainment options around Central Virginia. It's called "This Weekend," and can be viewed on the home page of TimesDispatch.com every Wednesday and Thursday.

The cast includes music reviewer Melissa Ruggieri, movie critic Dan Neman and Paul Whelan, editor of the Weekend tab that provides the content and gets a promotional boost from the webcast.

On Tuesday afternoon, multimedia producer Paul Kyber videotapes scripted segments with each cast member standing in front of a green screen. Shooting takes only a few minutes, but it can take hours to edit in stills, movie trailers, graphics and music to dress up the finished product.

This week's show featured a guest appearance by two young girls who demonstrated how to make an Easter hat from the bunny ears designed into the tab's color center spread. Reaction from readers and the newsroom staff has been enthusiastic.

And, over 82% of all respondents are researching or reading information Online on health and wellness for themselves and for their families.

Sharon Whiteley, CEO of ThirdAge, said "ThirdAgers (baby boomers and mid-lifers generally in their early 40's through mid 60's) are regularly stereotyped as being technophobes and slow to jump on the technology bandwagon. However... not only are they online, they're surprisingly a formidable presence on the Internet."
