During the 2002-2003 school year, the Richmond Times-Dispatch partnered with a low performing school district in the Richmond area. The Times-Dispatch went to the superintendent and asked how they could help raise SOL scores. The superintendent saw the value of having newspapers in the classroom on a daily basis and gladly worked with the Times-Dispatch on this project. |

For the 2002-2003 school year, the superintendent chose the lower performing schools in the district by examining their SOL scores. The Times-Dispatch provided newspapers for these schools, as well as teacher materials and workshops during teacher in-service days. Teachers were asked to encourage students to take the newspaper home every day after school in an effort to improve family literacy as well.
At the end of the school year, the schools that had newspapers made a vast improvement, even out performing the “better” schools in the district. The next school year, the superintendent asked for newspapers to be placed in all of the schools.
The Times-Dispatch has continued to work with the district for over 5 years and has continued to provide newspapers, teaching materials, and workshops. |
