"Most importantly, I feel that the Newspaper in Education program helped our students demonstrate significant improvement on the Standards of Learning tests.....
Working together, we will help our students achieve at ever-higher levels."

“This has been a valuable resource for our Civics and Economics classes this year, often taking the place of a traditional textbook in our classes.”
       -Neal Plumb, Walton Middle School

“What a tremendous asset the newspapers have been!  Over 20 different faculty members (representing over eleven departments) have been using class sets of the newspaper in their curriculum areas.  There are obvious connections, such as the Business section for our Business Department and the Book Reviews for our English Department…but our Fashion Design instructor uses the Style section and the glossy ads….Foreign Language teachers use the Travel Section…and, of course, the Editorial pages are excellent for our Government classes.”
-Rebecca Ferral, Gar-Field High School, Woodbridge, VA

"The newspaper is used in our middle school daily. Students in many classrooms benefit from newspaper in the classroom program. Civics classes use the paper to look at current political and social issues. Several teachers teach a unit centered on political cartoons. Science classes have a science in the news assignment each week.  Students need to find articles related to current science topics and summarize the articles. Math teachers often use the paper for activities involving "real life" math, where students must figure costs of items and deal with a budget. The newspaper is their primary source.

To improve reading skills students must push themselves to read daily. The newspaper gives students material that interests them, and that in itself motivates them to read."

-Pamela Collier, Reading Specialist, Luther Jackson Middle School

-Pat Baker, 3rd - 5th grades, Gifted/Talented, Mary Walter Elementary School

"NIE  works  for me because I feel it teaches the whole child.  All learners can  use  the  newspaper  and  feel  successful!   The students become more well-rounded by learning about current events."
-Susan Street, 4th grade, all subjects, Parkside Elementary
