Narrative Now

10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2008

Dave Barry once wrote that “one swell thing about the United States is that newspapers can print whatever stories they want. Another one is that nobody has to read them.” True enough, but this is also true: everyone loves a great story. They’re hard to find, you say. You’ve got no time. No one to help you. Enough with the excuses. Spend a day with me, and we’ll figure it out. We’ll talk about being storytellers and telling terrific tales, even on deadline.

Maria Carrillo is managing editor at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk. She is responsible for making sure the newsroom lives up to its goal: “To create the most accurate, fair, useful, aggressive and surprising news report every day for our readers.” Carrillo has been at The Pilot for nine years, previously directing many of the paper’s projects and overseeing the four-person narrative team. Her staff has been nationally recognized, including being Pulitzer finalists this year, and three serial narratives that she edited for the paper have been expanded and published as books.
